“You have to be an artist by nature. This is a certain type of people. If you are not an artist, you probably will never become one. And if you pursue the goal of selling paintings, even more so not to become. If you are an artist after all, then in order to become famous, you need to believe in your talent. I sold my first works when I was in art school. After the detour, she sold her entire plein air. Recently, such an entertaining story happened to me: I drew pictures without any ulterior motive, then a whole pack of them accumulated, and suddenly bam - a personal exhibition in After Six at Winzavod. Today the price is made up of gallery interest, art supplies, baguette, and my time. When I buy a pack of paper, I say: “I bought a pack of world art masterpieces, it remains to create additional value”.

“As my godfather tells me all his life:“ Don't be a fool! ” So I'm trying not to screw it up at this stage for now. I do not really remember the history of the first sale, I remember that about the same period when I started writing in general, three or four years ago. Three or four days after I ventured to upload my training sketches to Facebook, people started asking for a gift. I gave. Then someone asked if I was selling them. I asked my dad if I was selling. Well, he began to sell slowly. The ones that I drew with my teacher on watercolor paper. I remember how I sold my first painting. It was summer, I went to a meeting with a client. Was caught in a hellish rain, soaked to the skin. Thank God, the pictures were in the backpack, nothing of the art got wet. It was wildly disgusting and humiliating to come to a meeting in squishing moccasins. But everything went well, we bought three works, including my first one. A small underpainting on a piece of paper under glass. What am I drawing? Probably, these are impressions and associations that arise when you look at a certain combination of objects. Like a key in an intercom. I put a glass, a sandwich and a cigarette, and a mechanism is triggered inside you, you remember everything, you smile, you dream of a drink. So the heroes are us. Once I went to the institute on the subway and in a notebook I drew some things, something on an alcoholic theme. A girl sits down next to me, peeks over her shoulder for a long time, smiles, probably driving with a hangover! And then she asked her to draw something and gives a piece of paper. So I drew some ugly lion for her and signed it. She was wildly pleased, although she got off at the next stop. I didn't go to the economy, so I set prices for my paintings according to the horoscope. This year is good for Taurus. And the scales are getting cheaper. "

“To sell your work, you have to work hard, communicate a lot with people and constantly show everyone what you are doing. I sold my first works to a bank: I was seventeen years old, and I made several copies of my works for them. In this area, nothing should happen quickly, everything should be deliberate and clearly implemented. And this is a long way from a young artist to a professional. Once I got stuck in the elevator on the way to the workshop, in my head there was a meaningful picture, after six hours and a lack of air, everything changed dramatically - and I started working with plexiglass. True, after a while I returned to painting. In the modern art market, it is difficult to talk about pricing. The price consists of the cost of materials, the format of the work and the fee for my work. I usually do not go below the level of the last sale. The more paintings are bought from an artist, the more expensive his works become.

“To become a successful artist, you have to believe, work in the right direction and connect with the right people. I sold my first painting to my fan, and with the money I earned, I went on a trip. Art itself is a victim. Only crazy and brave people paint. Which is essentially the same thing. Anyone can become a hero of my work: I find all people and events interesting. The most mysterious story that happened to me as an artist: I exhibited in Ecuador. Twelve of my paintings are still there, in a country where I have never been. When evaluating a painting, it is important to understand that you spent not an hour with a brush, but your whole life to create it. The artist puts all his experience, knowledge, emotions into his painting, no matter whether it is a piece of paper or a stone sculpture. "

“An artist must work, work, work and develop. Do not be afraid to show your paintings, to meet people. I sold my first painting relatively recently, maybe a year ago. Earlier it seemed that it was not good to sell your work. In general, they ordered me to draw a picture on a medieval theme in a day, whatever (in my opinion, it was not important for the customer that it would be). So I drew the castle. The only prerequisite was to make it in oil on canvas. At the time of the transfer of the painting, the oil had not yet dried and there was a possibility that the paint would smear and the painting would be damaged. And the customer could get pretty dirty. Five years ago, when I was still studying at the Moscow State Academy of Arts, we went to the open air in Kalyazin for a week. Students scattered around the city, whoever wanted, and painted whatever their heart desires. They were mainly divided into small groups. There were five girls in my group. We walked everywhere together - so the locals are not scary (and they were not very friendly) and you won’t get lost. But still, one day I was left alone near an abandoned building, workers were dismantling it. Hammers rattled, bricks and axes flew from the windows. I stood with my back to this house, trying not to pay attention to the noise and people swarming in it. For a while, I even managed to remain unnoticed. But as soon as they saw me, it was no longer up to work. I got scared. A dozen hefty men, like kites, circled around me, looking at and furiously discussing something in their incomprehensible language. I was ready to run away, leaving the sketchbook, the paints, and my unfinished painting. But after five minutes they began to disperse and crawl back into the house. I began to gather convulsively. Suddenly, the largest of the men came out of the dark doorway and began to head towards me, his hands were behind his back, but he was clearly holding something in them. As he approached me, he smiled more and more (clearly from embarrassment). Approaching me in a tight one, he looked with pity at my palms and face, soiled with paint, then waved his hands and handed me construction gloves so that I would not get dirty anymore. It was very touching. I try not to raise prices, I'm still a beginner. First, the price depends on the size. Secondly, from the material. Thirdly, on the time spent on a particular painting. And, most importantly, how dear she is to me. "

“In my experience, you don't have to be famous to sell paintings. It is enough to have your own style and create a demanded product. How to make the picture trendy or find its buyer - no one will answer this question. This is probably a combination of skill, luck and taste. Nevertheless, I believe that the key to success is to draw what you like and enjoy life. If you get high, the new owner of your work will not be sad either, and everything will go in a circle like this, and maybe it will be such a contribution to world peace. I sold my first painting as a child, in a studio where I was taught to paint silk. It was round, made in the batik style. I don’t remember the details, but then I had enough for school breakfast. But the second one was bought a couple of years ago and immediately for the price I liked. This deal was the first step towards turning a nerdy lawyer into an artist. Initially, I did not understand at all how much I wanted to get for a painting, because I am not a “business” person in myself. But as soon as my acquaintances from the art world found out that I now position myself as an artist, they immediately gave me a CU, found people who understand something in assessing art, consulted with gallery owners and asked how much they had already bought from me (and bought from me for as much as people themselves offered). Since that moment nothing has changed globally, but I became more confident in my art and the price for which it is bought.

“And, in general, what is fame? I believe that Van Gogh, Egon Schiele, Monet, Titian are famous, because everyone knows them, and not in a certain circle or only a certain generation. Being a famous artist in a crowd is something that, for example, means nothing to me. My friends know that I am an artist, my family knows this, but this does not mean fame. At the moment I have had sixteen exhibitions, I think I am known to some extent, but not in this success, but in the fact that maybe no one knew, but, as I saw, I would fall in love with the works. I began to sell my paintings almost immediately, as I realized that I would be an artist, it was at the age of sixteen at the Student Art Fair, where I got by submitting an application on the Internet, a year later, in their competition, I won a trip to Miami. Then she sold paintings at exhibitions at which she participated. I remember how happy I was when they bought a job in Cologne. Now I sell some of my paintings on OilyOil and copies on Art Brut. Sometimes it happens that I personally buy or order paintings. I sold my first painting at the SAF fair. It was bought by an art history teacher from France. She was A5 size, with a watercolor girl with one eye. I didn't know how much it should cost, I knew I was hungry, and the sandwich cost 200 rubles, well, I sold it for 200. A year later, when I participated in the Blooom exhibition in Cologne, the appraiser gave 600 euros for a similar work from the same series. I then realized that apparently I really wanted to eat.

“I am still at the beginning of the path, two things are obvious to me now. First, you need to work hard, not be lazy and not drive yourself into depression and creative paralysis. The second essential component of success is communication with people. I am an introvert and it is not always easy for me to cope with this, but, in any case, in life without it there is nowhere, and I learn. It is not so difficult to start selling paintings, now there are many festivals, markets or online galleries. It is more difficult to make sales stable so that you can count on it as a monthly source of income. The first painting I managed to sell was commissioned. The client wanted to work on canvas, but then I saved on materials and never painted on real canvas. And so I thought: "A stretched canvas on a stretcher is for the bourgeoisie, I will do everything myself." I bought a piece of canvas, stretcher, sizing, primer, stapler (all came out together, of course, more expensive than the prepared canvas). So it began: with difficulty, as I could, I pulled the canvas, then gluing, drying, priming ... As a result, it turned out rather crooked, the stretcher was skewed, and the picture became in the form of a parallelogram. But the picture was accepted, some cosmic flowers were depicted there, even quite pretty ones. Then she earned five thousand rubles.

The most significant always happens inside, and it's hard to tell about it. There are many small stories happening to me now. And I don't even know yet which ones are important. Rain, fear, summer, friends, cherry pies, war. This is all, in fact, and is the most important thing, inside of me grows what I then try to draw.

I'm freelancing now, and in this mode, I really get to draw regularly, but with work it is empty, sometimes thick. It is not always possible to earn enough and sometimes you want to get a job in an office for greater financial stability. The price is made up of several factors: materials, format, time spent. I have never been able to calculate accurately, so now, rather, I proceed from the final price for which I can sell this work. It is foolish to set too high a price and wait for something. I work fast enough and now the prices for my work are from 5,000 to 40,000 rubles. If the sales are stable, I will increase it a little. Sometimes I sell small works even cheaper. It's better than keeping everything, stuffing it on the shelves, and I'm glad that almost anyone can afford to buy a picture from me. "

“How to become a successful artist? First, stand in front of the mirror and honestly answer the question why you need all this. Second, be ashamed of laziness. Thirdly, it's more wonderful to live. Fourth, die. Fifth, to rise again in 70 years and check if you were such an artist and whether it was worth playing this lottery all your life. As for the sale of works, the answer is simple: watch football, there is everything you need for commercial success. For the sake of art, I could sacrifice living in a metropolis. Although what is considered art? Most likely, it begins immediately after the death of the artist. I think about it. In my works, all those who inspired me to write them. And it could be anyone and anything: a phrase from Filonov's notebook, an image of a cow from the pages of a Soviet photo magazine in 1973, the hands of a saleswoman from the fish department. Six years ago, sitting in the office, with great passion he began to paint stationery, not even knowing what these handwritings would lead to. Pricing is based on my unique technique (I work with an awl, darts, screwdriver and other tools on paper), deadlines for writing, a sense of my own satisfaction, agreements with the Dutch gallery No Man's Art, with which I have been collaborating for the last year and a half. “It is difficult to answer such a question when you yourself are not very well known. And it depends on the sphere. For example, there is interior and contemporary art. In the first case, you just need to distribute your works and catalogs to salons and send them to good interior designers. In the case of contemporary art, I think you need to either "springboard" from the graduation exhibition of the university, and then participate in competitions, or just be in the art scene and do something of high quality. You can still be a cunning opportunist. In general, I think there are many ways, and to find your own art too. I sold my first painting to a friend for 2000 rubles. He sat drawing, he came to visit, he liked it - he bought it. I don't think you need to sacrifice for the sake of art. When I spend a lot of energy, time, when I stop communicating with my friends for a while, because I paint, I don’t feel that I am sacrificing something. Nothing decreases. Just the opposite. When I think about the price, I start from the format of the painting and the time it took to make it. And, of course, from the fact that I really like what I paint. "

“The most important thing is to become an artist who is honest with himself. So far, I am concerned about this issue. The world is teeming with wonderful amateurism. And I, of course, am a part of it, in every possible way I am looking for ways of retreat, towards something substantial, of a higher quality, and, as a result, sincere. Contrary to popular belief, the sale of paintings is an important valuation factor and a serious transition from amateur to professional. It doesn't matter what and to whom you sold, the motivation for acquiring the painting is important, it is like a universal justification for your activities. Designer Alexander Arutyunov bought my first painting at one of the exhibitions this year. It was a very personal painting that was bought, I think, for very personal reasons. It was very fast, I didn't immediately understand what was happening when I already had a significant amount of money in my hands, and the picture disappeared into the darkness of the car's interior. Art doesn't require sacrifice. Art requires all of you, and it is not a sacrifice. Art does not tolerate conjuncture, compromise, bragging, mediocrity. The main characters of my paintings are Gd, human virtues, human deviations and their status in the “everything is complicated” relationship. My picture (just the one in the photo) adorns the cover of a book published in Paris. When I was fifteen, I hosted unauthorized exhibitions in Boston and New York during my volunteer work. Daring hooliganism consisted of showing my early work in assembly halls in American nursing homes. Where, talking about a picture with an hourglass, about lost time, he brought elderly American women to tears. The pricing of my work is made up of a pinch of honesty, a drop of a smile, a handful of passion and a bit of vanity. Well, but seriously, there are man-hours, and there is a soul-hours. How much energy and emotion is invested, so much should be returned in equal terms. In money, emotions or other currency. "
