Who is Grushnitsky?

In the novel "A Hero of Our Time" Grushnitsky appears before us in the chapter "Princess Mary". This is a cadet who served with Pechorin and, like him, was treated on the waters. We immediately learn that Grushnitsky "wears, for a special kind of smartness, a thick soldier's greatcoat." This greatcoat is his mask, the "tragic mantle" that helps him appear in the eyes of women as a romantic hero, demoted to soldiers for a duel. Pechorin, who himself more than once played this or that role in order to take possession of the lady's heart, “understood him,” and Grushnitsky does not love him for this. And Pechorin does not like him. He feels that this young man is in some way his rival and that "someday they will collide on a narrow road." At the same time, he himself changes his appearance, putting on an old overcoat. His behavior also expresses falsity - with all his appearance he shows how the wound in his leg worries him. No water, he said, could help him get rid of the lameness, but the lameness goes away by itself when Pechorin appears next to Princess Mary.

This hero cannot evoke any sympathy, because through his pretense and invented suffering, he clearly evokes not pity, but rather rejection, because in fact Grushnitsky is narcissistic, and he also does not have a great mind. The appearance of Grushnitsky in the work was at first implied as participation in a love triangle between him, Princess Mary and, of course, Pechorin. Lermontov shows that the young cadet was, so to speak, the favorite of the princess, but soon everything changes: with the appearance of Pechorin, Grushnitsky fades into the background, he is already an unsuccessful competitor.

Without a doubt, this situation could not have happened without the intervention of Georgy Pechorin himself: he told Mary about Grushnitsky's emptiness as a person, insignificance, thereby opening the princess's eyes. After that, Grushnitsky becomes an unwanted guest at her house, as well as an intrusive interlocutor. She finds him boring and pathetic. Naturally, this moment has a strong enough effect on Grushnitsky, because Pechorin hurt his pride, and also lowered him in the eyes of his beloved.

This became the starting point for the character's disclosure. He was a kind of Pechorin, which undoubtedly angered Georgy himself. People do not like to analyze their actions, do not like to blame themselves for something, they only like to follow fashion and wear a mask, hiding themselves not only from the eyes of other people, but also from themselves.
