Viscose was invented back in 1884 by the French engineer Ilé de Chardonnay. And the very next year they opened an enterprise where they successfully implemented a new method. The new technology was highly appreciated by the famous Russian chemist D.I. Mendeleev.

Manufacturing process

Viscose is made from natural wood pulp. But to obtain the fiber familiar to everyone, several chemical processes are necessary.

The modern production of viscose fiber is not much different from that of a century ago, perhaps more modernized. There are four main stages:

  • creating a base directly by crushing wood into small chips and boiling it in an alkaline solution;
  • the formation of threads by squeezing the mass through the smallest holes in a special plate into a container with acid;
  • finishing;
  • drying.


Types of viscose fabrics

According to the method of production and the qualities obtained, viscose fibers are divided into three types: staple fiber, cord thread and rayon silk. The first is used to sew insulated clothing, rugs and carpets, silk thread is suitable for making home textiles, and cord thread is suitable for high-quality linen.

Several types of fabrics are distinguished depending on the raw materials and processing technology used.

  • Tencel. The fabric is made from eucalyptus cellulose. It is soft and silky to the touch, durable and has good moisture and air permeability. If not properly maintained, the fabric may deform, but this does not interfere with the use of the tencel for production bed linen and home textiles.


  • Modal. Although the fabric is 100% cellulose, it has all the qualities of cotton, and in some respects surpasses it. Modal is wear-resistant and durable and much more hygroscopic than cotton. It is usually used, sometimes with the addition of cotton fibers, when sewing high-quality everyday clothes and good-quality bed linen.


  • Acetate. The basis is not whole cellulose, but its waste. It is a delicate material with a slight sheen that resembles silk. Unlike other viscose fabrics, acetate practically does not wrinkle or deform. The reverse side is poorly breathable and practically does not absorb moisture. In addition, it is quite "fragile", begins to melt when the temperature rises, and viscose fibers can dissolve from a drop of acetone.

Due to its specific properties, the purpose of acetate is as a protective and lining material.


  • Cupra. This is the most valuable and high quality material that looks like silk. Along with excellent characteristics - good breathability, durability and thermoregulation - the fabric is very capricious to care for.   • Siblon. The "youngest" viscose material. The fabric was obtained in the late 70s from the cellulose of coniferous trees. Siblon has improved, at least one and a half times, positive characteristics than other types of viscose.


What is viscose fabric

Proper fabric care
