The birth of a child brings not only great joy to the parents, but also many different concerns. The main ones are the improvement of the baby's life. To do this, he needs to buy or sew, linens, towels, etc. But how and when to do it? Let's try to figure it out!

Every mother wants her baby to have all the very best, such that no one else has. So, everyone designs the baby's room to their taste.

For a baby, the main place where he is is the crib. That is why mothers with special care choose a set in a crib for a newborn. But, if mom or grandmother knows how to sew, and the family has sewing machine, then such a kit can be made independently.

The material for the bedding set for the baby must be chosen from cotton. The drawing, of course, we choose to our liking.

For the sheet, you need to measure in the bed and add 15-20 centimeters to the hem on each side. You can round the corners of the sheet and sew a regular linen elastic into the drawstrings. Then the sheet will not "get out" from under the mattress.

For a duvet cover, you need to measure the size of the duvet and add three centimeters on each side - for the seams and the thickness of the duvet. On one of the sides, you need to leave an open hole in order to tuck the blanket into the duvet cover.

You can make such a hole in the middle of one of the sides. Such a hole is processed with edging - you can use strips of fabric 4 centimeters wide, or you can process this hole with an oblique inlay.

For the pillowcase, also measure the size of the pillow and add three centimeters on each side for the seams and thickness of the pillow. Remember to add 20 centimeters to the valve. By the way, the baby does not need a pillow by itself, because instead of it they use a diaper folded several times. So you will need a pillowcase in a few months, not earlier.

Also, bumpers need to be sewn into the baby's crib. For them, you need to measure the perimeter of the crib. The fabric will need twice as much as the perimeter plus 10 centimeters. In height, such sides must be made at least 40-50 centimeters. The sides can be decorated with ruffles, lace. Sew on the ties, preferably so that they fall on every 2-3 crossbar.

... Each mother should prepare a first aid kit for the future baby. You can buy a ready-made first aid kit at the pharmacy, but it does not include absolutely all the necessary accessories for the baby. Therefore, it is better to collect the first aid kit yourself.

A home first aid kit should have supplies for daily needs and medicines for first aid to an infant.

For everyday needs, a pharmacy should have:

 • baby foam or liquid soap for (foam is used once a week, and soap is used daily)
 • baby cream (used as needed)
 • baby powder (applied for redness of the skin on the bottom)
 • cream or ointment for a diaper (protects the baby's skin from irritation and various rashes)
 • dried string, chamomile, calendula (their decoctions, which have a drying and disinfecting effect, are used for bathing a child)
 • cotton wool (used to clean the baby's nose and ears)
 • cotton pads (used to dry the umbilical wound)
 • bandage (used to treat scratches and diaper rash)
 • thermometer (measured by the child)
 • water thermometer (measured temperature before bathing)
 • enema (used in case)
 • small scissors (used to cut baby's nails)

The first-aid kit should also contain medicines intended for treating children from all kinds of diseases: allergies, colic, constipation, diarrhea, runny nose, pain during teething, etc.

There is an opinion that it is impossible to prepare a dowry for an unborn child. But in our time it is necessary to do this. In the hospital itself, it is necessary to provide hats, diapers and undershirts for the first hours of the baby's life. They take the child from the hospital in an envelope, which must also be bought.

Upon returning from the hospital, the child will need to have much more clothes: in addition to diapers, he is often worn sliders, socks, hats, "little men", overalls, undershirts, mittens, etc.

Also, the baby needs and (after all, walks in the fresh air are necessary from the first days of life). These things must be bought in advance, but you cannot leave them empty - put a doll or soft toy there.

A new mother is unable to buy it all after, and fathers often do not know the quality of the necessary purchases. And such things as a stroller and a crib should be comfortable, first of all, for the mother. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with things bought in advance for the baby.

High-quality sleep is the key to the well-being and vigor of the child. When the bedding rolls down and slides off, the baby will not be able to get enough sleep, which means he will be moody and lethargic. Therefore, when choosing a kit, do not neglect such an important criterion as size. It should not be small or large, but strictly correspond to the size of the bed and the height of the child.

Baby Bedding Size Chart

A standard sleeping set consists of a sheet, pillowcase and duvet cover. A table of sizes of bedding for children will help you make the right choice.

What is included in the newborn kit

With the birth of a child, the family faces a lot of joyful chores. One of the tasks is to choose the right and high-quality underwear so that the baby's sleep is calm, healthy and serene. This is what is included in the baby bedding set.

 • Blanket . Should be small and compact (typically 110 x 140 cm). For the summer period, a thin bike product is suitable. For the winter, you will need a duvet or camel blanket.
 • Mattress. As a rule, a product for a baby cot corresponds to dimensions of 120 x 60 cm.
 • Pillow. Must be soft and thin (no more than 2 cm thick). Although some pediatricians recommend doing without a pillow for the first three to four months.
 • Protective side. Its size is 360 by 36 cm. It should have a soft layer to protect the baby from injury.
 • Mattress topper. Protects the mattress from possible dirt.
 • Side pockets. Designed to store all kinds of little things (bottles, diapers, toys).
 • Canopy. Protects from glare, dust and insects.
 • Sheet. It is best to choose a product with a fixing elastic band.
 • Pillowcase. No small buttons. A product with a valve or fabric ties is suitable for a crib.
 • Duvet cover. The length and width should be 3-5 cm longer than the blanket.

In the summer, it is better to abandon the dense side and canopy. This overlap makes it difficult for air to circulate, which leads to poor health and sleep disturbance in babies.

DIY sewing

With all the variety of baby kits on the market, it is not so easy to choose the right one. If the size fits, the colors are not satisfied. And if the perfect pattern is found, some kind of overlay with parameters or quality of the material will definitely come out. Therefore, some mothers do not find a better solution than to sew bedding into a crib by themselves. This approach has several advantages:

 • exact correspondence to the size of the berth;
 • the ability to independently assess the quality of the material and decide on the color;
 • significant savings in the family budget.

Choosing a fabric

It is important to choose correct sizes baby bedding in the crib, and choose a quality fabric. Choose a natural, lightweight and hypoallergenic material. At the same time, the canvas must be strong enough. Basically, these are varieties of linen and cotton fabrics. There are several good options.

 • Baptiste. Thin and delicate fabric, pleasant to the body. It is characterized by low wear resistance.
 • Chintz. Heavy-duty cotton fabric. Differs in airiness and lightness due to rare weaving.
 • Calico. Dense natural fabric, resistant to repeated washing and mechanical damage.
 • Satin. Dense and durable material with a shiny surface. Consists of tightly woven fine fibers.
 • Poplin. Cotton fabric with interlacing of silk fibers.
 • Flannel. Soft fabric that is pleasant to the body and slightly brushed. Coats quickly.

In addition to the quality of the fabric, you should pay attention to the colors. Experts believe that blues, peaches and beige tones are the most favorable. When looking for an option for a teenager, also discard overly bright drawings.

Sheet

Features. The size of the bed sheet for a baby cot for a newborn is determined based on the size of the mattress. Measure its length and width, add two heights to them (usually 10 cm) and 3 cm per hem on each side. As a result, for a mattress measuring 160 by 80 cm, you will need a piece of fabric measuring 186 by 106 cm.

How to sew

 1. Fold the edge of the sheet 1.5 cm (double fold) twice.
 2. Baste by hand, then machine stitch.
 3. Repeat this step on the remaining three sides.
 4. Iron the seams.

Cut two identical pieces of fabric from the canvas. Wash, dry and iron one of them. Compare the snippets. If the processed one has decreased, it means that the fabric shrinks, which must be taken into account during the cut.

Duvet cover

Features. The easiest way to sew a duvet cover at home is from two rectangles. To determine their parameters, you need to add 5 cm each to the seams and allowances to the length and width of the blanket.

How to sew

 1. Sew the edges of each rectangle 0.5 cm.
 2. Place the pieces right sides together. Sew rectangles on three sides.
 3. On the fourth side, determine the location and size of the blanket hole. Fasten the fragments up to the marks.
 4. Sweep the gap.
 5. Iron the seams thoroughly with an iron.

If you are afraid to make a mistake in determining the shrinkage coefficient, wash and iron the fabric before starting work. This will allow you to safely cut pieces of linen in accordance with the actual size.

Pillowcase

Features. You will need a rectangular pattern to sew a pillowcase. Its width will be equal to the width of the pillow, taking into account the allowances (5-6 cm). Length - two pillow lengths, flap (15-20 centimeters) and seam allowances.

How to sew

 1. Finish the edges of the pattern.
 2. Fold the pattern with the right side inward so that the future flap remains free.
 3. Fold in the flap to make something like an envelope.
 4. Sew along the sides of the pillowcase.
 5. Turn the garment inside out and iron it.

If you want to sew exclusive baby bedding with your own hands, decorate it with satin ribbons, braid or textile lace. But it is better to refuse to use buttons, buttons, beads, zippers and Velcro, as the child can tear them off and swallow or get injured.

Having decided on the size, quality and color of the bedding set, it is important to take care of proper care. After examining the reviews, there are five key points, the observance of which will ensure the durability and safety of products.

 1. First use... Be sure to wash the laundry before putting it on the bed for the first time.
 2. Detergents . Use soft powders or concentrates, preferably natural ones. Can't be washed kids clothes products with a strong aroma.
 3. Washing features... Child bed linen sets should be washed separately from adult items. In addition, we recommend that you turn your pillowcases and duvet covers inside out.
 4. Rinse. Rinse the laundry twice or thrice so that no detergent particles remain between the fibers.
 5. Ironing. Iron the laundry while it is still damp. In this case, the iron must be warmed up to the maximum permissible temperature indicated on the tag.

If you want to sew a kit yourself, you should not always be guided by standard sizes bed linen in a cot. Bedroom furniture, the size of the textile set for it should be selected taking into account the height and physique. As for the color and pattern, the child's preferences will have to be taken into account with age.

Almost all inexperienced young mothers are thinking about what is better - to buy a ready-made bedding set for a crib or to sew it yourself. Naturally, there can be no definite answer here, since each mother makes her own decision. If you know how to sew at least a little, you want to make high-quality bedding for your baby, of some special color, or his crib has non-standard parameters, then it is better to familiarize yourself with how to sew baby bedding into a crib with your own hands. In this article, you will find all the information you need on this topic.

Quality of crib kits

All children in the first few months of their life are almost constantly in the crib - there they either sleep or play. The quality of sleep directly depends on the quality of the selected set. Remember that the delicate skin of a newborn is in contact with the laundry all the time. Therefore, when deciding to make your own bedding for newborns with your own hands, study the main requirements that it must meet:

 • Safety. The fabric used for the manufacture of children's bedding must be natural, soft, high quality. If there are drawings on it, then the paints used to apply them should not leave marks on the skin. The ideal option is a hypoallergenic fabric that allows air to pass through well. Carefully read the information on the label. As a rule, the composition of the fabric, its size, rules for caring for it are indicated there.

Important! It is better to buy ready-made kits with Velcro, since buttons for newborns are not suitable.

 • Practicality. It is important that the bed linen does not deform after washing, does not fade, does not wipe.
 • Convenience. At the time of purchase, you must examine each seam. They should be neat and inconspicuous.

Important! The best option is a sheet with an elastic band, because it will not crumple, fall to the floor.

How to choose a fabric?

Before you sew baby bedding, you first need to purchase quality material. Silk, linen, cotton are ideal for this. Since it is these fabrics that are characterized by their hypoallergenicity, naturalness, they are perfectly breathable.

Important! When buying, it is imperative to consider such a parameter as hygroscopicity. It is necessary that the fabric absorbs water well, so that diaper rash and prickly heat do not appear on the baby's skin.

 • Calico. This fabric has thick threads, is characterized by dense weaving, due to which it has high wear resistance.
 • Ranfors. This material is durable, strong, soft. It is perfectly washable, adapts to any temperature conditions of the environment.
 • Poplin. This silk fabric can be solid or multi-colored. It retains heat well, is easy to use, does not wrinkle.
 • Satin. It is made by twisting thin threads. It has a glossy sheen, so the fabric is quite pleasant to the body.
 • Flannel is a material that is pleasant and delicate to the touch. It is made of cotton with fluffy fleece.

Important! As you know, newborns are much calmer, longer, sleep better when they are surrounded by pink, blue, beige colors. Therefore, it is better to sew bed linen from fabrics of calm shades, without bright patterns. Remember that at this age, children still do not need any drawings, prints, pictures.

Dimensions of the baby sleep kit

The sizes of baby bedding in a crib cannot be called standard, because they can vary greatly - it all depends on the size of the bed and personal requirements and preferences. Traditionally, a sleeping place for a newborn is 60 cm wide and 120 cm long.

For different manufacturers, these numbers may vary, so the ideal option is to make it yourself. As a rule, the kit consists of the following parts:

 • Pillowcase 40 x 60 cm.
 • Duvet cover size 110 x 150 cm.
 • Sheet measuring 110 x 150 cm.

Sewing bed linen for a newborn

Now we get to work, we sew baby bedding with our own hands. As already mentioned, the fabric for this should be purchased from natural cotton, for example, flannel, satin or chintz. To sew a pillowcase, sheet, duvet cover, you will need about 4 meters of fabric 150 cm wide.

 • Before sewing, the fabric should be prepared, washed well in soapy hot water, rinsed, dried and ironed from the wrong side with a hot iron.
 • To make a sheet, measure a piece of fabric 110 cm long and another 5 cm for allowances, that is, you get 115 cm, cut it off.
 • For a duvet cover, measure 225 cm - this will be 110 cm in two pieces and 5 cm for allowances, cut off.
 • As a result, you will have a piece of 45 cm material, in fact, which you will use to make the pillowcase.
 • The sheet is easy to sew. It is necessary to hem the edges on all four sides, while bending them, leaving the overlapped sections open or closed.

Important! You can do even easier, for example, make a sheet with an elastic band.

 • Bend the material for the duvet cover along the marked lines, sew one length and two short ones. The edges can be processed with a single or double seam.

Important! Leave a small hole unsewn at the bottom or side to thread the blanket through.

 • Only the pillowcase remains. Sew short cuts of the remaining rectangle with a hem seam. Then fold the fabric inward with the wrong side. Sew the side edges on a typewriter, trim the allowances. Turn the pillowcase inside out, straighten it, sew the edges again to width. Turn it right out again.
 • Wash the finished set again in warm water, then rinse well, dry and iron with a hot iron.

Important! It is not recommended to overload children's kits with decor, embroidery, appliqués, overhead elements. The main thing is that they first of all comply with hygiene requirements and standards, be practical, aesthetically beautiful.

How to sew bed linen into a crib for newborns with your own hands - now you know. But it is also equally important to properly care for it in the future, wash, dry, iron:

 • It should be changed every week to ensure your baby sleeps well.
 • It is recommended to wash at a temperature not lower than 60 degrees to destroy harmful microorganisms.
 • Drying should be done in the fresh air, because ultraviolet light works well as a disinfectant.

As you can see, everything is very simple and just a couple of hours will be enough for you to make a couple of replacement kits for your child.

I would like to present you my first master class. It is certainly not original, but very practical. This is a good example of how to sew bedding, not only for children. But it's easier to start with just this, since the sizes of the accessories are small. So to speak, a mini-version of bedding.

We will sew a set of children's bedding from coarse calico "Animals". Fabric width 150cm.

The dimensions of our future set determine the dimensions of the bedding in the crib: pillow 40 cm * 60 cm, mattress 120 cm * 60 cm * 10 cm, blanket 110 cm * 140 cm.

I will not calculate the shrinkage, since the manufacturer indicated this figure on the fabric label.

Who cares how this indicator is calculated: we take a piece of fabric, for example 1 m by 1 m, and wash it the way we wash our linen, after washing, drying and ironing, we look at how many our segment has sat down. Using a simple proportion, we calculate%:

old length - 100%;

new length - X%;

Shrinkage = 100 - (new length * 100 / old length).

For example: took 100 cm, after washing 95 cm, Shrinkage = 100 - (95 * 100/100) = 5%.

In my case, the shrinkage of the fabric is 2%. Accordingly, when sewing, we will add these 2% to all parameters, rounding up to whole centimeters (for example, the width of the pillowcase is 60 + 60 * 0.02 = 61.2 = 61).

So, taking into account the shrinkage error, we calculate the size of the bedding set:

- pillowcase with wrap: 61cm * 41cm;

- duvet cover with a "hole" in the side 112cm * 143cm;

- sheet with elastic band 122cm * 61cm * 10cm.

Recently I already wrote how to calculate the amount of fabric for sewing, so we will not delve into this topic.

Suppose that the width of the seams will be 1.5 cm, which means that during cutting we will add 3 cm to the seams. We will make the seams ordinary, with a hem with a closed cut or open (if we will sew the edge of the fabric).

And don't forget to secure the thread at the beginning and end of each stitch!

Wrap pillowcase 20 cm... We add two seam allowances to the length, and in the width we lay two pillowcase widths, a scent width and 2 seam allowances:

length: (41 + 3 + 3) * width: (61 + 61 + 20 + 3 + 3 = 47cm * 148cm.

To cut sheet with elastic, both to the length and to the width, you need to add two heights of the mattress and 2 allowances for the fold under the mattress (10 cm) with a drawstring for the elastic:

w: (61 + 20 + 20) * d: (122 + 20 + 20) = 101cm * 162cm.

When calculating the fabric for duvet cover with side entry, we add 2 seam allowances to the length, and we put two widths of the duvet cover in the width and one seam allowance:

d: (143 + 3 + 3) * w (112 + 112 + 3) = 149cm * 227 cm.

Below is a plan for laying out the elements on the fabric, in which the pattern on all the elements is directed in one direction. In this situation, a piece of unused fabric remains:

So, with a fabric width of 150 cm, we need 476 cm of fabric.

To save money, the elements can be arranged like this:

But then the drawing on the pillowcase will look sideways.

Here's another option:

Then the sheet will be one-piece, but the pattern on it, like on the pillowcase, will look to the side.

Let's start cutting

First, you need to make sure the edge of the fabric is cut straight. The roll is folded in half, right side out. We will continue to cut without unrolling the fabric.

Begin to lay 227 cm from the raw edge of the fabric for the duvet cover. We make marks in two or three places, draw a straight line and cut off:

We do the same with the sheet for the sheet. Set aside 101 cm and cut off:

Then unfold the fabric and measure 47 cm from the edge (top), draw a rectangle and cut it off from the main canvas.

The most attentive should have noticed a piece of the sheet on the layout plan, separate from the main part of it. The thing is that in our case, to sew a sheet with an elastic band, we need a piece of fabric 101 cm * 162 cm.Since the width of our fabric is 150 cm, we will have to set 12 cm. To do this, on the remaining canvas, draw a rectangle of 15 cm (3cm will go to the seam) * 101cm. Later we will sew it to the main canvas.

Let's start sewing

Let's start with pillowcases.

We process the two short sides of the future pillowcase separately using a hem with a closed cut:

We put the future pillowcase face up, measure from one edge (spent) 61 cm, in the resulting label we fold the fabric with the front side inward:

We put aside another 61 cm from the fold and fold the other processed side in the resulting label (that is, we put the smell on top of the already folded halves):

Here's what we got:

We pinch in several places with needles (so that the smell does not move out):

Where the fabric has an edge, the hem can be made with an open cut. We make money (those who are confident in themselves can immediately make a line on a typewriter):

On the other hand, we make a hem with a closed cut:

We lay the lines on a typewriter:

Here's what we got:

Let's start sewing sheets.

First, let's connect both sheets of the sheet. We fold them with their front sides (which are 101 cm) to each other:

We sew them with a hem with a closed cut:

Iron the seam inside out and from the face:

We lay out the canvas on a flat surface:

Fold in half, and then in half again:

So, the fabric is folded 4 times. We will work with the angle that you see in the photo.

We need to draw a 20 cm * 20 cm square, pin the fabric on both sides of the marked lines and cut out the corner:

Expand the fabric:

We will make the corners of our future sheet. For each of the four corners, do the following:

1. Fold the slices with the front sides (for clarity, I marked the folded slices with red lines);

2. We fold with a hem with a closed cut;

3. Laying the line:

After doing the same operation three more times, this is what happens:

The next step is to make a drawstring for the elastic. We make a fold around the entire perimeter of the sheet with a closed cut. Only the seam is not 1.5 cm, but 3 cm (to make it easier to insert the elastic):

Now we lay a seam as far from the edge as possible so as not to narrow our drawstring. The end of the line should not reach its beginning by 3-4 cm.This is necessary in order to insert the elastic:

It was the turn of the rubber band. Measuring the correct amount of elastic is very easy. Add the length and width of the mattress:

Elastic length = 120 cm + 60 cm = 180 cm.

Cut off 1.8 m of elastic.

You can use a pin to insert the elastic into the drawstring. But personally, it annoys me that in the process it bends, opens and bites into the fingers ... brrr ...

And since I often have to do this, I came up with the following device for myself:

This is a sushi stick with a small cut at the top. Just below the cut, I wrapped it with tape so that during operation it would not crack further 🙂

So, we insert the elastic into the drawstring (insert the elastic into the incision of the stick and begin to lift this end forward):

We straighten the elastic in the sheet and fasten the ends to each other with several stitches:

The sheet with an elastic band is ready!

Let's start sewing duvet cover.

We unfold the fabric, and fold it again, only across and with the front side inward, so that the fabric sections are folded together.

We process two short sides of the duvet cover. We make the seams with a hem with an open cut (as well as the top and bottom edge of the fabric):

It is now the turn of the "entrance" design for the blanket. Let's make it 50 cm wide.

We measure 40 cm from the bottom seam, put a mark and another 50 cm from it, and again a mark.

We process the entrance. To do this, bend one layer of fabric to the wrong side and process it between two marks with a hem with a closed cut. Turn the duvet cover over and repeat the same on the other side:

We make on each side of the "entrance" a line from label to label:

Here's what happened:

Now you need to sweep the cuts on both sides of the "entrance" with a fold with a closed cut:

This is how the entry corners look like:

We lay the lines and you're done!

Here's our final piece, the duvet cover:

As a result of the master class, we learned how to sew a set of children's bedding, consisting of three elements.

I hope you enjoyed our master class with my mom. Please note that this is our first master class at the Masters Fair. We will be glad to receive your feedback and constructive criticism 🙂
