"Over the eternal peace" is the third of the paintings of a kind of dramatic trilogy created by Levitan in the first half of the 1890s. - (Along with the pictures "Umut" and "Vladimir").

For the first time in the painting of the master, in addition to the poetic beauty of eternal nature, the philosophical attitude towards the strugnure of human being is felt. Under the cushioning lead-lilac clouds on the steep and deserted bank of the huge, stretching to the very horizon of the lake stands a dilapidated wooden church.

Behind her, the dull pollutes bent under sharp gusts of the wind are a few trees. And around - nor soul, and only dim light in the window of the church gives a ghostly hope for salvation.

It is not by chance that the artist chose a similar image viewing angle. The picture is full of feeling of deep longing, powerlessness and loneliness, but a very expressive point of view of the author, who directs the viewer to swell, towards cold air flows.

... The paintings of Levitan caused the same pain as the memories of terribly distant, but always tempting childhood.

Levitan was an artist in the sad landscape. Landscape Peacon is always when the sad man. For centuries, Russian literature and painting talked about the boring sky, skinny fields, beds. "Russia. Beggar Russia, I have a black hut, your songs are wind, like the tears of the first love."
